Hey builders,

A model that looks right is not necessarily a model that still works after one number changes. That is where parametric CAD earns its keep: the design has a memory of why it has that size.

Start here: open SolidCraft’s free browser sample →, change one dimension, then save the before/after in assets/PARAMETRIC-CHANGE-CARD.md. No account, paid model or agent connection required.

🧰 THE TOOL SHED

Every Wednesday: one tool under the hood, one useful build, three supporting tools and an honest comparison. Today’s rule: a pretty model is a draft; a rebuilt model is evidence.

🔦 UNDER THE HOOD

SolidCraft is an open-source parametric CAD app written in Rust. It runs on desktop and in a browser, and its command layer can also be driven from a CLI or an MCP server. The Oct. 13 v0.7 release fixed stacked-extrude sketching, added modelling and export fixes, and documented a format change. A Show HN thread has already pulled in builders arguing about what an agent-driven CAD workflow should actually verify.

The useful bit is not “AI makes a part.” It is the parameter timeline: dimensions can be model parameters or named expressions, and changing one can rebuild everything that depends on it. A shape can export successfully while a later edit still exposes a broken assumption. The project’s own docs are candid that it is early; surfaces, drawings, CAM and simulation remain deferred.

Access: the browser sample is free and needs no account. If WebGPU is fussy, the docs say ?webgl forces WebGL2. MCP is optional and requires a local CLI plus an existing compatible client; skip it for today’s build. MCP tools can change or export files, so never grant broad paths or auto-approve a design you have not inspected.

Who it’s for: builders making a small enclosure, bracket or fixture—and teams that want a repeatable way to check a size change. My take: this is promising because the same command path can be clicked, scripted or handed to an agent. But a fast-moving CAD project deserves small, reversible tests, not a blind production run.

Verdict: 🔨🔨🔨 (3/5 — a sharp open experiment; verify every rebuild before manufacturing)

🧰 THE TOOLBOX

  • FreeCAD — Build full parametric parts in a mature desktop CAD workbench.

  • OpenSCAD — Describe precise parts with readable, versionable code.

  • CadQuery — Script parametric solids in Python for repeatable outputs.

⚡ THE 5-MINUTE BUILD

Make one parametric change you can explain

  1. Open the browser sample. Use the Start here link; it opens a sample part without an install or account.

  2. Write the intent first. In the card, name one dimension and its job: “width must clear [THING] by [GAP].”

  3. Find Parameters. In the SOLID toolbar, open CONFIGURE → Parameters; every feature input has a model parameter such as d1.

  4. Change one expression. Record the old value, then try a deliberate new value such as 20 mm → 30 mm. Let the timeline rebuild.

  5. Inspect and save the result. Note what changed, whether any feature failed, and whether the new shape still meets your intent. Save a copy; do not print or order it yet.

The rule: A changed number is not a validated design. Record the rebuild and the fit decision.

🧭 HIDDEN GEMS

  • Build cleaner reusable 3D-printing geometry. BOSL2 is a free library of parametric OpenSCAD primitives. Grab it →

  • Check a model before a printer sees it. PrusaSlicer is a free, open-source slicer with print-prep tools. Grab it →

📐 ONE TERM A DAY

Today’s term: parametric model

Plain English: It is a recipe, not a sculpture. Change “two cups of flour” to three, and every part of the recipe that depends on it adjusts.

Why you should care: Parameters make a design’s assumptions visible—and give you one place to test them before a bad size spreads.
